Behind the Design: A Tropical Celebration in San Juan

When Gaby and Juanki began planning their wedding in Puerto Rico, they wanted guests to feel the spirit of the celebration long before they arrived.
The couple trusted us to create their wedding branding, stationery, website, and day-of paper goods for their Puerto Rico celebration. Our goal was to create a visual identity that captured the warmth of the Caribbean while remaining personal to the couple.
The result was a visual language that created a cohesive experience before guests arrived on the island.
The Vision
The wedding took place at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, a venue where historic architecture and tropical surroundings exist in conversation. Stone courtyards, lush greenery, and warm evening light informed much of the visual direction.
Rather than referencing Puerto Rico in an obvious way, we focused on capturing its atmosphere through color, illustration, and texture.

The Live Sketch
Every Clemente project begins with a live sketch session.
In lieu of presentations and mood boards, our Creative Director, Laura, sketches in real time while speaking with the couple. It is a collaborative process that allows ideas, references, and emotions to take shape immediately on paper.
For Gaby and Juanki, many of the elements that would later define the suite appeared during that first conversation. The guests dancing in celebration, palm trees, the colonial architecture of the venue, and the illustration of the couple’s pet Valentina, were established early and carried through every subsequent piece.

The Website
For destination weddings, the website often becomes a guest's main interaction with the event.
We designed Gaby and Juanki's website as an extension of their stationery suite, ensuring that the visual identity remained consistent across both digital and printed touchpoints.
Beyond housing travel information and event details, the website introduced guests to the aesthetic of the weekend and set expectations for the celebration ahead.

The Invitation
The invitation became the centerpiece of the suite.
We selected a gatefold format inspired by the experience of moving through Old San Juan's historic houses and courtyards. As the invitation opens, guests are gradually introduced to an illustrated scene inspired by the couple, their families, and the spirit of the celebration.
The artwork balances architectural references with moments that feel deeply personal, including nods to family traditions and the couple's beloved dog, Valentina. Every detail was intentional, creating a piece that felt both immersive and uniquely theirs.

The Digital Invitation
For the digital invitation, Gaby had one request: movement.
Using elements from the printed suite, we animated the illustrated figures, allowing them to dance across the screen to music chosen by the couple. The motion brought an additional layer of personality to the design while referencing a defining part of many Latin American celebrations: the role of music, dancing, and gathering.
The result was a digital experience that introduced guests not only to the visual identity of the wedding, but to the atmosphere they would soon be stepping into.
Menus & Signage
The guest experience does not begin and end with the invitation.
Menus, signage, and day-of details play an important role in maintaining visual continuity throughout an event. For Gaby and Juanki, these pieces carried forward the same illustration style, fonts, and color palette established from the beginning.
Placed against candlelight, natural textures, and abundant greenery, they became part of the larger environment rather than standalone pieces. Perfectly curated to go with the planning from Nerida Alvarez, and the decor from Stem Events.

Why Cohesive Design Matters
One of the most overlooked aspects of wedding design is consistency.
When every touchpoint shares the same visual language — from the save the date to the website, invitation, and other stationery — guests experience the celebration as a whole rather than as a collection of separate elements.
That cohesion creates clarity. It strengthens a sense of place. Most importantly, it allows the couple's story to remain present throughout the entire guest journey. And, it also looks visually appealing! Just as captured by wedding photographer Jaime Rivera.
For Gaby and Juanki, that shared language became the thread connecting every part of the weekend.
